CHA A, B, and B- walks involve navigating through mountainous terrain, making it essential that all participants are appropriately dressed and well-equipped. For both safety and comfort, it is vital for all walkers to have suitable footwear, appropriate clothing, and other necessary essentials. The following points provide a summary of the essential requirements to ensure a safe, enjoyable, and comfortable experience while walking in these conditions.
- Looking after your feet by wearing good footwear is a must. Walking in mountainous areas (A, B and B- walks) often includes wet boggy areas, crossing streams, walking across rocks and scrambling up the sides of peat hags. For these walks good sturdy waterproof walking boots with good grip are essential and should preferably have high ankle support. For less demanding terrain lightweight more flexible boots may suffice.
- Gaiters help to keep feet dry in wet conditions and prevent debris from getting into your boots.
- Well fitting hiking socks prevent blisters and make for a more pleasant experience.
- Trousers made of synthetic material will dry more easily after becoming wet and are recommended. (Denim jeans, or any cotton trousers will absorb water and take a long time to dry). Specialist walking trousers are widely available in outdoor shops.
- Waterproof jackets and over trousers are recommended at all times in Ireland as well as a suitable hat and gloves.
- A rucksack is essential to carry spare clothing along with water, lunch and a hot drink.
- Many walkers will also carry a survival bag, spare socks, a first aid kit, a headlamp and a map & compass.
- Dogs are not allowed on club walks.
The walk leader has the discretion to refuse a walker if they are not appropriately equipped. More detailed advice is available in the members’ section for leaders and walkers.
